Wayne Wonder does reggae at Trocadero
By DAMON C. WILLIAMS

Tayon Malik.

Whatever one's preferred flavor, there's an event to match this weekend, beginning tonight with reggae dancehall artist Wayne Wonder at the Trocadero (1003 Arch St., 8 p.m., $21, 215-922-LIVE, www.thetroc.com).

Wonder, on a hot tour with the chart-topping hit, "No Letting Go," will link up with Baby Dred, Vybes Xpress and Philly's own El Feco B for this wicked dancehall blender. Shouts to the JDM massive for once again bringing in a hot reggae show.

Those looking for hip-hop tonight should check out the "Wonder-full" Stevie Wonder Tribute party at SoleFood (1200 Market St., 10 p.m., $12, 215-627-1200). Square Biz (www.squarebiz.org), Keister and Beautiful Peoples joined up to provide this set, and Cue Records (www.cuerecords.com) will handle the sounds.

Those hip to the latest footwear fashions should stop by Sneaker Villa's 1018 Market St. store tomorrow for the unveiling of Timberland's New Look Wedge Chukka Boot for women. The festivities run from noon to 3 p.m.

What's in it for hip-hoppers?

Well, aside from peeping the latest footwear, Power 99's Golden Girl will broadcast live from the Villa. There will be giveaways and door prizes, too.

Philly challenges NYC

After checking out the new fly kicks, strut over to the Pontiac Grille (304 South St., 9 p.m. tomorrow, $10, 21+, 215-925-4053) for the first and long-overdue New York vs. Philly M.C. Challenge. This has been expected since Breeze dropped "This Ain't New York."

Representing Philly is the lyrical demon iCon the Mike King, who will tag up with Dos Noun and GQ (of the ODD camp). Reppin' New York are Breez Evaflowin', Chocolate Tai and Datin.

"You have the first and second cities of hip-hop coming together," promoter Tim Savage said.

If that's not enough to get you out, there will also be performances by Black Market, Carl Kevorkian, Pack FM and Pumpkinhead. Tha Blaze.com and End of the Weak.com teamed up for this surefire event. For more info, shoot Savage an e-mail at tim

savage@thablaze.com or ring 610-999-1731.

Next on deck for tomorrow is the always-thorough Tasty Treats set at Fluid (613 S. 4th St., 9 p.m., $10, 215-629-3686, www.fluidnightclub.com). Mike Nyce and ?uestlove will offer up their usual doses of rhythmic goodies. Online cats can check Fluid's Web site for the latest.

Positively hip-hop

Readers interested in contributing to the Philadelphia hip-hop movement should not miss Tuesday's general meeting of the Greater Philadelphia Hip-Hop Alliance.

GPHHA is about making positive strides as a unit. Next week's meeting will focus on recording and production with guest speaker Vernon "Spell" Hayspell of Big Tyme Enterprises. The session begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the meeting room of University Square, 3901 Market St.

For more info, shoot an e-mail to GPHHA president Rashid Duggan at Rashid@Numill

On Wednesday, aspiring female vocalists, arrangers, spoken-word artists, lyricists and poets may apply for a part in the upcoming MWM Freedom Choir and Women's Orchestra. Auditions will be held at the University of Pennsylvania Rotunda (4012 Walnut St.). To register, or for more info, call 215-213-0078 or e-mail BWDL7@aol.com.

Tayon the Southpaw

Last we heard from Tayon Malik, he was dazzling heads with the stellar debut set on Sadiya Entertainment, "Who Is He?"

Now, cousin is back with something strictly for the streets.

His unofficial sophomore set, "Call Me Lefty - the Mixtape," is a collection of freestyles over established beats.

"This was a different step for me. I took time out from work on my next CD," Malik said. "I wanted to show some flexibility, and the response has been positive."

Indeed, with gems such as "No Sequels," "No Beat" and "Last Days," it's easy to understand why Malik chose to do a straight-to-the-streets release.

"I attribute it to familiar beats," he said. "Before, [listeners] had to grasp new vocals and new beats. This time, they can focus just on the lyrics."

There is an exact science to a local emcee keeping his name hot while working on an official follow-up to a solid debut.

"This shows a different, street side to me," Malik said. "People can see where my lyrics are, how I have grown as an artist. I hope it grows my fan base."

It can't hurt that Malik also included some homegrown talent on his newest mixtape. After all, what better way to get thorough emcees on your mix?

"I threw some local guys in the mix because they felt love for me, so I showed these cats some love back," Malik said.

"Call Me Lefty" should tide fans over until the springtime release of Malik's as-yet untitled, official sophomore set.

"We're working the single right now, with the video coming in late winter/early spring," said Malik. "People are definitely looking for what's next."
