Fel Sweetenberg is proud to represent Camden with 'Lost Dreams'

With his new CD, Fel Sweetenberg hopes to put his hometown, Camden, in a better light.

New Jersey is home to a number of stellar emcees and camps, such as Manifest Destiny, Caliph Now, Viro the Virus and Poor Boy Entertainment.

Solo emcee Fel Sweetenberg, of Camden, N.J., will surely be added to that list with the release of his "Lost Dreams, Wasted Talent" EP. On it, Fel displays a wide range, from the simply lyrical "Awful Pretty" to the immensely heated collabo cut "The Hierarchy," which features Poesh Wonder, Dave Ghetto and Fury.

"I'm trying to relive the golden era of hip-hop, back when it felt good to go out and get an album," said Fel, a ranking member of the Nuthouse rhyme squad who will play Philly's Silk City tomorrow night. "Almost like a Christmas vibe."

Fel certainly delivers gifts of lyrical wizardry throughout the EP. Its sound and production are solid, and Fel's lyrics dance in step with the head-nodding beats. But is Fel's gifted, lyrical flow good enough to escape the stereotype attached to Camden?

Casual fans may dismiss Camden as a quick stop on the way to North Jeru and New York, but Fel is determined to show the quality and quantity of Camden emcees.

"Part of my music is to prove a point," Fel said, discussing what he views as the undue negative rep his hometown receives. "People don't know about Camden. We make no plastic [music]. There's an elite few in Camden. And we're making an impact."

Fels' debut EP is also the first for the Break Bread Projects label (www.break-bread.net). But while it might be argued that he'll have to deliver for Break Bread to make it, Fel feels no heat.

"Being first off the label, there's was no real pressure," said Fel, 22, who honed his rhyme tactics in many a high school lunchroom beat battle. "I wanted to make it good and push the envelope."

Fel pulled off a hip-hop double by rhyming on and producing the EP. His production is marked by timely, authentic DJ scratches accompanying solid riffs and sturdy bass loops. Fel had creative control over just about every aspect of this release, including the blunt but original title.

"'Lost Dream, Wasted Talent' is an analogy that describes the whole city of Camden," Fel said. "That was the whole idea behind this project. It's like a monster in the basement, waiting to come out."
