The Neighborhood Information System (NIS)

The Philadelphia Neighborhood Information System is a family of interactive applications that allow you to find information about your neighborhood.

The NIS uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is computer software that ties data to maps. For example, a street map of Philadelphia will show you where things are located. GIS allows you to show where things like housing sale and population changes are taking place.

You can use the NIS to:
-Create maps that display data
-Look at charts and tables of information
-Look at trends of data changes over time

The four different applications get their data from different sources. Click the name of the application to get a description of what you can do with it.

The NIS makes information publicly availible and user-friendly. We want planners, the City, community-based organizations, and all concerned citizens to be able to research where they live, and to ask questions about how their neighborhood compares to others, and what they might be able to do to change things. Knowing informs doing. The NIS is about action, about assessing and improving the quality of the built environment, and the quality of life, in Philadelphia.
